Bolu Sunyaragi: A Delicious Cirebon Heritage Cake

2 min read

Bolu Sunyaragi is a name that may sound unfamiliar to some, but it holds a wealth of flavour and history. This sponge cake is one of Cirebon’s culinary specialities and has become an inseparable part of the food identity of the “City of Shrimp”.

Origins and What Makes It Special

The name “Sunyaragi” comes from a historic garden in Cirebon, the Sunyaragi Cave Water Garden. The idea for the cake is said to have come to the owner while visiting the Sunyaragi garden. Its unique recipe and distinctive taste make Bolu Sunyaragi special.

What makes this cake special is its soft texture and rich, sweet flavour. It is made with high-quality ingredients such as eggs, wheat flour, sugar and butter, and its traditional production process adds to its authenticity.

A Careful Baking Process

Making this cake takes precision and patience. The batter is made by whisking eggs and sugar until fluffy, then folding in flour and melted butter. It is baked slowly to create a soft sponge that is perfectly cooked.
